Husband and Alleged Girlfriend Arrested for Killing Woman, Dumping Body in Gomti River
A shocking murder case has come to light from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, where a married Ola driver and his alleged girlfriend have been arrested for the murder of the driver’s wife. According to police, the accused allegedly strangled the victim before dumping her body in the Gomti River in an attempt to destroy evidence.
Investigators say the crime was the result of an alleged extramarital relationship that began several months ago.
Affair Began During an Ola Ride
According to the police investigation, the main accused, Umendra Pratap Singh, works as an Ola cab driver. His co-accused, Aarti Verma, is a resident of Shalimar in Indira Nagar and is employed at a call center.
Police said the two first met around seven months ago when Aarti booked an Ola ride. Their acquaintance reportedly developed into a romantic relationship over time.
Wife Allegedly Discovered the Relationship
Investigators said the victim, Anjali Singh, learned about her husband’s alleged affair around a month before the incident.
Following the discovery, frequent arguments reportedly took place at home. Police believe the ongoing disputes led the accused to allegedly conspire to eliminate Anjali.
According to the investigation, Anjali was allegedly suffocated during the night of July 30–31 before her body was wrapped in a blanket and transported in a car to Itaunja, where it was thrown into the Gomti River.
Missing Complaint Filed to Mislead Police
After the alleged murder, Umendra reportedly tried to mislead investigators by filing a missing person complaint at the local police station.
Police also alleged that he removed 32 pieces of jewellery, valued at approximately ₹10 lakh, from the house and handed them over to Aarti. The move was allegedly intended to create the impression that Anjali had left home with the jewellery.
However, after a woman’s body was recovered from the Gomti River on July 31, a murder case was registered following a complaint filed by the victim’s brother.
Police Recover Jewellery, Phones and Vehicle
Using surveillance footage and technical evidence, Rahimabad Police traced and arrested both suspects.
During the investigation, police recovered:
- 32 pieces of the victim’s jewellery
- Two mobile phones
- The Swift Dzire car allegedly used during the crime
Police also stated that Umendra has a previous criminal case registered against him in Hardoi.
Investigation Continues
Police are continuing their investigation to gather additional evidence and complete the legal process.
The case has drawn widespread attention due to the alleged motive and the attempt to conceal the crime by filing a false missing person report.
