Vegetation Helps Sustain the Green Sahara

Compared to bright desert sand, vegetation has a darker surface that absorbs more sunlight instead of reflecting it. Plant cover also helps retain moisture in the soil and reduces the amount of dust released into the atmosphere.

Meanwhile, lakes and wetlands increase evaporation, adding more moisture to the air. This creates a positive feedback cycle that encourages even more rainfall and supports the formation of additional lakes and wetlands.

Researchers believe the “Green Sahara” is part of a long-term natural climate cycle driven primarily by changes in Earth’s orbit and rotational axis.
