Prashant Kishor’s Win Reshapes Bihar’s Political Landscape
The Bankipur Assembly by-election has delivered a major political surprise in Bihar. While the result is being viewed as a significant setback for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in one of its traditional strongholds, it has also created fresh challenges for the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
The outcome suggests that a section of RJD’s traditional support base may be shifting towards Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party (JSP), raising important questions ahead of future elections.
BJP Loses Its Stronghold
Prashant Kishor secured more than 64,000 votes to win the by-election, defeating the BJP in a constituency long considered one of its safest seats.
RJD candidate Rekha Kumari finished in third place with around 14,000 votes.
The contrast with the 2025 Bihar Assembly election is striking:
- BJP: Over 98,000 votes
- RJD: More than 46,000 votes
- Jan Suraaj Party: Around 7,000 votes
Within less than a year, the by-election witnessed a dramatic shift in voter preferences.
Why RJD Is Worried
Despite Bankipur being an urban constituency dominated by upper-caste voters and traditionally favouring the BJP, it also has a sizeable population of Yadav and Muslim voters, who have historically formed the core support base of the RJD.
The sharp decline in RJD’s vote share has raised concerns that many anti-BJP voters may now see Prashant Kishor as a stronger candidate capable of defeating the BJP.
Political observers believe this perception could pose a long-term challenge for the opposition party if similar voting patterns emerge in other constituencies.
Opposition Sees Opportunity Against BJP
Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav focused on the BJP’s defeat, stating that the result reflected public dissatisfaction with the politics of Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary.
RJD MP Sudhakar Singh said:
“The Bankipur result proves that the BJP can be defeated in Bihar and across North India. It reflects growing public dissatisfaction with the government’s performance.”
However, senior RJD leaders privately admitted that the outcome also forces the party to reassess its own political strategy.
Internal Review Within RJD
A senior RJD leader acknowledged that the party had not expected to win Bankipur because it has traditionally been a BJP bastion.
According to the leader, many anti-BJP voters appeared to consolidate behind Prashant Kishor, believing he had the strongest chance of defeating the BJP.
The leader also noted that the result should motivate party workers by showing that even BJP strongholds can be challenged through sustained grassroots efforts.
Alleged Police Encounters Became a Political Issue
According to RJD leaders, public anger over several police encounters during the current government also influenced voting behaviour.
The party has alleged that members of the Yadav and Muslim communities were disproportionately targeted in these encounters.
Earlier, Tejashwi Yadav accused the government of selectively targeting certain communities, an allegation the BJP has denied.
Some RJD leaders believe this issue encouraged many traditional RJD supporters to vote strategically in favour of the candidate they believed had the best chance of defeating the BJP.
RJD Maintains Confidence
Another senior RJD leader argued that the by-election should not be viewed as evidence of a permanent erosion of the party’s support base.
According to the leader:
- Bankipur is primarily an urban, upper-caste constituency.
- Momentum shifted toward Prashant Kishor during the final phase of campaigning.
- RJD continues to possess a strong cadre-based organisational structure across Bihar.
- Jan Suraaj still faces significant challenges in expanding beyond urban appeal and addressing Bihar’s caste-based political realities.
BJP’s Assessment
While BJP leaders acknowledged the electoral setback, they believe the long-term political implications may not necessarily favour the opposition.
A senior BJP leader stated that although Prashant Kishor managed to attract some traditional BJP voters in the by-election, the party expects to regain their support in future elections.
The leader also argued that, over time, Jan Suraaj could divide the anti-BJP vote rather than consolidate it.
Factors Behind BJP’s Defeat
According to BJP sources, several local and political factors contributed to the loss:
- Discontent among upper-caste voters over proposed UGC equity regulations.
- Growing youth anger following protests related to alleged examination paper leaks.
- Last-minute replacement of the BJP candidate.
- Voter complacency after the party’s long-standing dominance in the constituency.
Party leaders believe these factors combined to produce an unexpected electoral outcome.
Historic Victory for Prashant Kishor
Prashant Kishor’s victory is being regarded as one of the biggest political upsets in recent Bihar politics.
The Bankipur Assembly constituency, long considered a BJP fortress, witnessed Kishor registering a winning margin of 19,324 votes.
A total of 25 candidates contested the election, but only three candidates managed to retain their security deposit, highlighting the highly competitive nature of the contest and the dominance of the top contenders.
