‘One Child Policy’ remained in force in China for a long time. Because of this there has been a huge shortage of women in the country. Now the young boy is unable to find a bride. Amidst this crisis, the process of cheating the youth has started.

The ‘One Child Policy’ which was implemented in China for decades has now created a big problem for the youth of the country. Due to the desire to have a boy as a child, the situation has become such that at present the number of men in China is about 3 crore more than that of women. Now boys are not able to find a bride for marriage. Many youths are wandering in search of a girl. Now scammers are taking advantage of this situation. Many such cases have come to light from China where ‘flash marriage’ i.e. fake agencies and marriage bureaus that arrange quick marriages are making unmarried boys their victims.

According to a BBC report, such agencies extort millions of yuan from men by promising to get them simple and homely brides within a few days. After a few days, the brides run away with the money. Sometimes the entire marriage turns out to be fake. Chinese youth are very concerned about this problem.

Ordeal of 37 year old Wang Juang

One such story is that of 37 year old Wang Juang. Wang had lost hope of marriage by this age. However, one day he saw an advertisement of a marriage agency. They felt that their search was finally over. The agency told him that it promised to get him a good girl. Falling for the trap, Wang paid the agency about $44,000 including the agency fees, bride price and wedding expenses.

The agency convinced him to marry a woman after 4-5 meetings of just 8-10 minutes each. But after a few months of marriage, calls from debt collectors started coming. Upon investigation, it was found that the woman had been married thrice before, had three children and was also suffering from a serious venereal disease. The girl was deeply in debt. As soon as the truth was revealed, the woman offered divorce but refused to return the money. When Wang reached the marriage agency office after losing, there was no office there.

shortage of girls in china

Due to the ‘One Child Policy’ which has been in force in China for a long time, there is a huge shortage of women in the country today. There are 3 crore more men than women in China. In such a situation, the demand for girl children has increased a lot. In small towns and rural areas, houses, cars, family businesses and even huge ‘bride prices’ are demanded from men for marriage. Taking advantage of this compulsion, marriage agencies trap men with advertisements like ‘3 days of meeting is better than 3 years of dating’.

action begins

In view of the increasing cases of such fraud, Chinese authorities have initiated action. Between January 2024 and March 2025, more than a thousand people have been arrested for crimes related to marriage agency. The lawyer of Beijing Jingxiang Law Firm says that there is no separate law for this type of marriage fraud in Chinese law. In such a situation, the accused often argue in the court that the boys really wanted to get married but later separated due to differences. This makes it difficult to prove fraud.
