There are preparations to further strengthen defense relations between India and Japan. Japan’s Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi is on his first visit to India. He will hold a bilateral meeting with Defense Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi on 20 August 2026. In this meeting, there will be talks between the two countries on increasing cooperation in maritime security, weapons and defense technology. This meeting is taking place at a time when the concerns of many countries regarding China’s increasing activities and maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region have increased.
Both India and Japan want the Indo-Pacific region to remain open, secure and stable. In such a situation, this meeting of the two Defense Ministers is being considered very important to further strengthen the relations between the two countries. In the meeting, both the countries will discuss to strengthen maritime security. The sea is also important for India and Japan because a large amount of trade between the two countries takes place through sea routes. Apart from this, both the countries also want to work together in the field of defense equipment and technology.
Special discussion will be held on ocean security
India is continuously emphasizing on manufacturing weapons and military equipment in the country under ‘Make in India’. In such a situation, sharing technology with Japan and cooperation in making defense equipment can be beneficial for India. Japan has recently changed its rules related to giving defense equipment and technology to other countries. This is likely to increase cooperation in the field of defense technology between India and Japan.
Japanese Defense Minister has seen the strength of Navy in Mumbai
On August 19, a day before meeting Rajnath Singh in New Delhi, Shinjiro Koizumi visited the Western Naval Command in Mumbai. Here he met Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan and Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Western Naval Command Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsyayan.
The Japanese Defense Minister was given information about the responsibilities of the Indian Navy and its military capability. He also took the salute of the Indian Navy soldiers. After this he paid floral tributes at the Gaurav Stambh located in the Naval Dockyard and visited the Indian-built warship INS Chennai.
Why is this meeting important for India-Japan?
India and Japan have been increasing their cooperation in the field of defense and security for the last several years. Both countries want that the sea lanes in the Indo-Pacific region should remain safe and the dominance of any one country should not increase. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi had come to India just a few weeks before the visit of the Japanese Defense Minister to India. He had an annual summit meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In that meeting, both the countries had agreed to further strengthen defense and security cooperation.
