The Ebola outbreak in the Central African country Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has become the fastest-spreading outbreak in history. According to the latest data released by the government, the number of deaths among confirmed cases has crossed the 2,000 mark.
According to official data, the country has so far recorded a total of 4,381 confirmed cases, of which 2,011 patients have died. At present 704 patients are undergoing treatment in different isolation wards and hospitals.
Deaths doubled in 3 weeks: Why is this wave scary?
Nearly three months have passed since the Ebola outbreak was declared on May 15. The speed of this epidemic can be gauged from the fact that the first 1,000 deaths were recorded in about 9 weeks. Another 1000 died in just 3 weeks.
Health workers and relief agencies say that the number of deaths has increased so rapidly due to the inability of timely medical aid and medicines to reach remote and inaccessible areas.
Bundibugyo virus: no vaccine, no accurate treatment
This Ebola outbreak is completely different and more dangerous than other outbreaks so far.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the outbreak began spreading in the most remote and vulnerable areas of Congo in February, even before it formally emerged in May.
The biggest outbreak since 1976
The Ebola virus was first identified in 1976 near the Ebola River in Congo. This has become the 17th and largest outbreak of Ebola in the history of Congo.
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and WHO teams are trying to save patients on the ground and break the chain of infection, but the epidemic remains a cause of serious concern due to the ongoing instability in the region and the lack of an approved vaccine.
