There was a spectacular rise in the Indian stock market on the first trading day of the week. On Monday, Sensex jumped by 564 points, while Nifty also closed after crossing the level of 23,400. Strong buying in pharma and realty stocks supported the market. However, market breadth remained weak and many stocks fell.
After the closing auction session, Sensex closed at 74,859 with a gain of 564 points or 0.76%. At the same time, Nifty rose 68 points or 0.29% to the level of 23,414. However, the rise was not uniform across the market. A total of 1,995 shares ended with gains, while 2,111 shares closed with losses.
Strong buying in pharma and realty shares
A mixed but largely buying trend was seen in the sectoral indices. Nifty Pharma closed with a gain of 1.27% and remained on top among the sectoral gainers. Good gains were also seen in Nifty Realty (1.22%) and Nifty FMGC (1.19%). Apart from this, Nifty Bank (+0.24%), Nifty PSE (+0.13%), Nifty Energy (+0.09%), Nifty IT (+0.03%) and Nifty Services (+0.05%) also remained in the green. On the other hand, decline was recorded in Metals sector (0.62%), Nifty Infra (-0.14%), Nifty MNC (-0.30%) and Nifty PSU Bank (-0.05%).

- rising stocks: Itanal remained on top with a gain of 2.77%. Strong buying was seen in HCL Tech (2.54%), ITC (1.79%), Sun Pharma (1.72%), Reliance (1.71%), Max Healthcare (1.65%) and Titan (1.59%). Along with this, shares of HDFC Life, SBI Life, Tech Mahindra, BEL and ONGC also closed with gains.

Decline in midcap-smallcap
Despite the rise in big stocks, midcap and smallcap indices remained under pressure. Midcaps were down 0.29% and smallcaps were down 0.15%. At the same time, India VIX declined by 1.14%. This means that the level of volatility in the market was slightly less than in the previous trading session.
