These statements come after the FIR lodged against senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, in which they have been accused of creating obstruction during the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’. Also, Kerala VC Mohanan Kunnummal had recently commented at an RSS meeting criticizing those who protested against the national anthem.

VC Mohanan Kunnummal Saturday said that those who oppose singing ‘Vande Mataram’ do not know who their mother is. Kunnummal was giving the Independence Day message in the program ‘Sankalp 2026’ organized for the youth by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) here on Saturday.
‘Those who do not know their mother oppose Vande Mataram’
In his speech, the Vice-Chancellor said that in the matter of India, mother is supreme. He said that this is the reason why the word ‘Bharatmata’ is used and ‘Vande Mataram’ is sung. “Vande Mataram is sung because Bharatbhoomi is mother. Those who do not know their mother, they oppose the use of Vande Mataram. Those who know their mother and understand the meaning of being a mother, they will always say Vande Mataram. It should be like this.”
He said, “Mother India itself has handed over children to their parents. These children have been kept in your homes for a developed India. The responsibility of making them promising children and ideal citizens lies with every male and female head of the household. I would say that this applies even more to the female head of the household. Because as far as India is concerned, she is our mother.”
