Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ) has taken a big step in India’s maritime trade and logistics sector. The company is now going to start a Dedicated Empty Container Yard (ECY) at Mundra Port and SEZ in Gujarat. This new facility aims to make the entire process of handling empty containers easier and faster. This is expected to directly benefit exporters, importers, shipping companies and logistics related businessmen.
According to APSEZ, the company has about 45.5 percent share of India’s container market in the financial year 2025-26. At the same time, Mundra Port alone handles about 35 percent of the total container business of the country. This is why Mundra Port is considered to be India’s largest container-handling port. Mundra is estimated to handle around 16 lakh TEUs of empty containers every year. In such a situation, starting a dedicated empty container yard will help in making this big network more organized.
Many container related facilities will be available at one place
The new empty container yard will have multiple facilities for empty containers. Services like storage, maintenance and inspection of containers will be available here. Additionally, the movement of empty containers to exporters and Container Freight Stations (CFS) will also be managed better. This will reduce the need to repeatedly move containers to different places. As a result, along with saving time, it can also help in reducing logistics costs.
Exporters and logistics companies will benefit
According to Ashwani Gupta, CEO and Whole-time Director, APSEZ, the new yard will help in making operations in the container ecosystem more efficient. This will benefit the entire supply chain by getting the work done faster and reducing unnecessary movement of containers. Moving empty containers within the Mundra Port SEZ will also enable better coordination between customs authorities, shipping lines, terminal operators and transporters.
Target to increase capacity by more than 60 lakh TEUs in 5 years
This initiative is part of APSEZ’s Ambition 2031 roadmap. The company is planning to increase the container handling capacity in its network by more than 60 lakh TEUs in the next five years. Mundra Port will play an important role in this expansion.
