The estimated cost of this deal is said to be US $ 24.3 billion. The proposed sale includes 48 F-35 aircraft with takeoff and landing capability and 49 Pratt & Whitney F135-PW-100 engines. The deal package also includes other items like secure communication, precision navigation and cryptographic equipment, electronic warfare database support, aircraft and ammunition support equipment, spare parts, training equipment, simulators, software, technical documentation and logistics support.

The US State Department has described Saudi Arabia as a key non-NATO ally and said the deal will improve the kingdom’s security and support US foreign policy and national security objectives as a force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East. The State Department said the sale of the F-35 to Saudi Arabia would strengthen its domestic security. In addition, this deal will improve Saudi coordination with the US military and other regional and NATO forces and improve its ability to deter current and future threats.
