The matter of alleged layoff of about 80 Indian customer-service employees working in an American bank is being discussed on social media. An employee has claimed this matter on Reddit. According to the employee, the entire Indian customer-service team was informed about the termination during a short Google Meet. It is claimed that this entire meeting lasted for about 5 minutes.
The employee shared this post in Reddit’s r/IndianWorkplace community. According to him, he used to work in the 6:30 pm shift. That day the employees were suddenly asked to work from home. The reason given to them was operational region. A few hours later, at around 9:30 pm, the team members were asked to join senior management on Google Meet. The employee alleges that after reaching the meeting, the team was told that their jobs were being terminated. That means, about 80 employees were informed about termination in a single call.
Why did the company lay off the entire team at once?
In the Reddit post the employee wrote that All 80 employees! All gone. He said that this decision will affect about 80 families. According to the post, the company’s performance and output were cited as the reason for this decision. However, the employee questioned this logic. He said that if the problem is related to the performance of some people, then why was the decision taken to fire the entire team?
After the post surfaced, many users on Reddit reacted to it. Some people expressed concerns about job security, while others discussed the uncertainty of jobs like outsourcing and customer-service in global companies. However, one important thing about this whole matter is that these claims made on Reddit have not been independently confirmed. The exact number of affected employees, the complete circumstances of the layoff and the reasons given by the company are currently based on the claims of this employee. Therefore these cannot be seen as official confirmation of the company.
This case has attracted the most attention for the manner in which the employees were allegedly informed about the loss of their jobs. Usually, in such a situation, employees are talked to separately, but here it has been claimed that information has been given to the entire group in a single online meeting. With the workplace becoming digital, such methods have become more possible. It has become easier for companies to talk to employees sitting in different cities and countries simultaneously through video calls. But for employees, getting the news of sudden job loss on the screen can be quite a shocking experience.
