Thiruvonam 2026: Onam is considered to be the most prominent and popular festival of Kerala. The most special day of this festival which lasts for several days is Thiruvonam. Today, on 26th August 2026, the festival of Thiruvonam is being celebrated with full enthusiasm and enthusiasm. On this day, houses are decorated, Pookkalam i.e. Rangoli is made with flowers and a grand feast is prepared with traditional dishes. According to religious belief, Thiruvonam is related to the demon king Mahabali. It is believed that Mahabali loved his subjects very much. Due to his increasing influence the gods started worrying. Then Lord Vishnu took the form of Vamana and came to test Mahabali. Vaman Dev asked for three steps of land as donation from Mahabali. Mahabali accepted his demand. After this Vaman Dev assumed a huge form. He measured the earth in the first step and the sky in the second step. When there was no space left for the third step, Mahabali moved his head forward. Lord Vishnu was pleased with Mahabali’s charity and dedication. It is believed that he got the boon of going to the underworld, but at the same time he was also allowed to come to earth to meet his people once a year. Onam is seen to be associated with this belief.

House and courtyard get decorated to welcome Mahabali
During Onam, Pookkalam is made with flowers in front of the houses. This is a rangoli of colorful flowers, which is specially decorated on the day of Thiruvonam. It is believed that Mahabali is welcomed through Pookkalam. On this day people wear new clothes and prepare traditional food at home. Onam Sadya includes a variety of dishes served on banana leaves. Family members sit together, eat food and celebrate the festival.
