When there was no space left for the third step, Mahabali moved his head forward. Lord Vishnu was pleased with Mahabali’s charity and dedication. It is believed that he got the boon of going to the underworld, but at the same time he was also allowed to come to earth to meet his people once a year. During Onam, Pookkalam is made with flowers in front of the houses. This is a rangoli of colorful flowers, which is specially decorated on the day of Thiruvonam. It is believed that Mahabali is welcomed through Pookkalam. On this day people wear new clothes and prepare traditional food at home. Onam Sadya includes a variety of dishes served on banana leaves.
