Have you ever thought that a drain is being excavated and a treasure worth crores of rupees is found in it? This happened in Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde city of Belgium. Here the workers were doing repair work of a general drain. During this time, the workers found a priceless treasure hidden underground. This treasure found during the excavation being done to lay the sewer pipeline includes a huge quantity of gold coins, gold biscuits and precious ingots. According to initial estimates the total value of this treasure is approximately nine million euros. In Indian currency it is estimated to be around eighty to eighty-five crore rupees.
The ground suddenly started spewing gold
This shocking incident came to light when an eighteen year old student was working as a laborer there during summer holidays. He got the job of digging a drain near the old beer factory. While using the spade, he heard the sound of something metallic hitting the soil and the old wall of the basement. When he and his fellow workers removed the soil from there, they thought that these were ordinary coins, but on digging deeper, shiny gold rods and ingots of ancient times started coming out.
As soon as the news spread, a huge crowd started gathering in the area. People started trying to find the treasure at their own level. After this the local police took immediate action. The entire area was sealed from security point of view. The entire treasure recovered has been deposited in a safe government vault.
whose treasure is this
Historians and experts believe that this treasure belongs to the nineteenth century. It is related to Theophilus Van Assche, a famous beer factory owner of that time. It is believed that due to the political turmoil or financial insecurity of that period, he might have hidden his life’s earnings safely in the wall of the basement. Due to being buried behind the wall for decades, this treasure could not be seen by anyone till date.
what will happen to the treasure now
According to Belgian law, if any historical treasure is found, a legal process is initiated to find its rightful owner or heir. The real owner or his descendants will be given five years to prove their claim on this treasure. If still no legitimate heir comes forward, the property will be divided between the owner of the land and the treasure hunters as per the property law.
