Tension between Russia and Ukraine is at its peak. Both the countries are now attacking each other vigorously. Meanwhile, Ukraine on Sunday attacked various parts of Russia with hundreds of drones. At least six people died in this attack. It is believed to be one of the largest air attacks on Ukraine since the war began. Russia’s Defense Ministry said it destroyed 822 Ukrainian drones overnight. Of these, about 600 drones were moving towards Moscow, the capital of Russia. According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, about a third of these were shot down in the Moscow region.
Yuri Slyusar, governor of the south-western Rostov region, said five people were killed in drone attacks on three cities in the region. More than 150 drones were involved in the attack, which damaged several houses and a railway station and caused forest fires. In the Moscow region, Governor Andrei Vorobyov said an 83-year-old man was killed when a Ukrainian drone fell on a private house. A fire also broke out at a Wildberries warehouse in the city of Podolsk.
Russia also retaliated
During the same time, Russia attacked many targets in Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky said two people were killed and 14 injured in a Russian missile attack on Kryvyi Rih. Another person was killed in Sumy. Ivan Fedorov, head of the local military administration in the southern Zaporozhye region, said a man and a woman were killed in the attack on the home. In total, five people died in Ukraine.
Russian attacks in Kiev caused a fire and injured six people. A fire also broke out in a big book market near Pochaina metro station, due to which black smoke rose and many kiosks and pavilions were damaged. Zelensky said Russia “attacks civilian infrastructure with ballistic missiles wherever it can reach.” Russia’s Defense Ministry claims it targeted a metallurgical plant in Kryvyi Rih and several military-industrial targets in Kiev, including a facility producing Ukraine’s Flamingo missiles.
These recent attacks indicate an increasing air war between the two countries, in which areas far from the front are also being targeted. Ukraine has been escalating attacks on Russia this year, using long-range missiles and drone swarms against military industry and energy facilities.
Drone attack in Romania also
In a separate incident, Romania’s National Defense Ministry said an F-18 fighter plane of the Spanish Air and Space Force on Sunday morning shot down a drone that had entered Romanian airspace. The surveillance system detected the drone at 4:44 a.m. about 24 kilometers north of Galați, near the Moldovan border. Spanish F-18s destroyed it at 5:01. Later, debris of the drone was also found in the Black Sea, about 1.5 kilometers from Constanta.
