Vande Bharat is the first indigenous semi-high-speed train with locomotive engine. It has been manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. There is no engine at the front that pulls the coach at the rear, rather like a metro train, every coach is fitted with a motor. The top speed of Vande Bharat is 180 kmph, but its operational speed is 130 kmph to 160 kmph. That means it does not run at top speed carrying passengers. Its operational speed is 130 to 160 kilometers per hour, that too depending on the safety conditions of the track.

Now let us understand the speed of Tejas. The tested top speed of Tejas is 200 kmph, but for traveling it runs at a speed of 130 to 160 kmph. It rapidly accelerates and decelerates depending on stations, turns and signals.

Talking about technical capability or design speed, Tejas Express is capable of running at a speed of up to 200 km per hour, even though its operational speed is less. It is considered to be the train with the highest design speed among the conventional class trains of India. In comparison, the design speed of Vande Bharat Express is 180 km per hour. That means, on paper, Tejas is 20 km per hour ahead of Vande Bharat in terms of speed capacity.

The real question is who actually runs faster on the track? The interesting thing here is that due to the existing limitations of the track, both the trains are not able to run at their full design speed. In the current situation, both Tejas and Vande Bharat are operationally limited to about 160 km per hour. This means that in everyday travel, passengers experience almost equal speed in both the trains, even though Tejas has more technical capacity.

Speed is not just about the maximum speed, but also about how fast the train accelerates. Vande Bharat is a self-propelled trainset with distributed power system. This means that the motors are distributed throughout the train, no separate engine has to be added. This allows it to accelerate and decelerate faster than conventional locomotive-hauled trains, reducing the average travel time between stops. Tejas Express runs on the traditional engine-coach model, hence in terms of acceleration it is not considered as agile as Vande Bharat.
