Who was M Visvesvaraya?
Visvesvaraya was also known as Sir MV in the country. Sir Visvesvaraya’s full name was Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. Bharat Ratna awardee M Visvesvaraya was born on 15 September 1861 in a Telugu family in Kakkaballapur taluk, Kolar district of Mysore, Karnataka. People used to call him Vishwa. Visvesvaraya’s father’s name was Srinivas Shastri, who was a Sanskrit scholar and doctor of Ayurveda. He was 12 years old when his father passed away. After completing his early studies in Chikballapur, he went to Bangalore from where he obtained BA degree in 1881. After this he went to Pune where he studied in the College of Engineering.
Diwan of Mysore became for great work
Visvesvaraya had a keen interest in science since childhood. After obtaining the degree of Civil Engineering in 1883, Visvesvaraya was immediately appointed to the post of Assistant Engineer. government job Had found it. In 1909, the Diwan of Mysore offered him the post of Chief Engineer of the state, which he accepted. Seeing Vishwaji’s brilliant work, the King of Mysore appointed him the Diwan of Mysore.
Bhagiratha of Karnataka
Dr. Mokshagundam is also called Bhagiratha of Karnataka. With the help of excellent engineering and foresight, he solved the huge water problem in Karnataka and brought development on the dry land. Visvesvaraya designed and constructed the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam on the Kaveri River. At that time it was one of the largest dams in India. Due to this dam, vast agricultural areas of Mandya and Mysore got water for irrigation, due to which the barren area became very fertile and green.
At the age of just 32, he made a plan to supply water from the Indus River to Sukkur town. All the engineers liked that plan. He made steel gates to stop the flow of water from the dam, which was also praised by British officials. It is still being used today. Visvesvaraya also prepared plans to dam the waters of two rivers named Musa and Isa. After this he was appointed Chief Engineer of Mysore.
Many institutions including Krishnaraja Sagar Dam, Bhadravati Iron and Steel Works, Mysore Sandal Oil and Soap Factory, University of Mysore, Bank of Mysore came into existence due to his efforts.
He is considered to be the main pillar of the construction of Krishnaraj Sagar Dam built in Mandya district. Lakhs of farmers and common people are benefiting from the Krishnaraj Sagar Dam built by him on the Kaveri River. He also provided a system to protect Hyderabad city from floods. He patented and installed an irrigation system with water floodgates at the Khadakwasla Reservoir near Pune.
In 1917, Visvesvaraya established the Government Engineering College in Karnataka, now known as the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering.
He prepared a plan to send water from Indus River to Sakhar town. He built steel gates that helped stop the flow of water from the dam. Visvesvaraya also made a plan to dam the waters of two rivers named Musi and AC. Even today the water supply systems built on his advice are used. Today the civil engineers of the country take inspiration from him.
